      The first day of December dawned with a blanket of fresh snow, and for those who don't have to be out, it is beautiful. All of this snow makes everyone think of Christmas and the upcoming DeTour Village Christmas. This old-fashioned celebration has certainly expanded since its early planning meetings of the EUP Fine Arts Council four years ago.

      Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but this is winter in the Upper Peninsula, so it must be dealt with accordingly. Thanksgiving proved to be a very busy travel day, with folks coming and going to dinner with friends and relatives.

      It was a pleasant weekend, with many folks taking advantage to go Christmas shopping on the mainland. It's Sunday evening, November 30, and the weather forecast is for a winter storm. It's starting to snow, and the wind is increasing. With the fresh snow and all the beautiful Christmas decorations being put up by the city crew, everyone will have the Christmas spirit.

      It's December, and on the first day, Mother Nature didn't let us forget it is wintertime. As I'm writing this, the snow is coming down, the plows are out, and Engadine Consolidated Schools are closed owing to bad weather.

St. Ignace
      Thanksgiving was a time for families to get together and count their blessings. Our family was fortunate enough to have a visit from Vern and Karen (nee Wester) Perry, former St. Ignace residents, over the holiday. They were glad to get out of snowy Marquette to "balmy" St. Ignace. We enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Brevort
      The weather December 1, 1956, was very snowy, cold, and blustery, just like today, December 1, 2008. That day, 52 years ago, Dave and I were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort. After the ceremony, we plowed through more than a foot of snow to Allenville, to have dinner with Jake and Rose Ellen Weiss and other family members.

Thompson State Fish Hatchery Dams Slated for Removal by DNR

      Among the projects on the Department of Natural Resources' short list of missions to accomplish is removal of two dams at Thompson State Fish Hatchery near Manistique in the Upper Peninsula. Fisheries officials have been trying to remove outdated or unnecessary dams from Michigan waterways for several decades.
