Special Education Parenting Group To Host Craft Show, Christmas Party
Seeks Parent Volunteers To Serve on Board
      Parents with special needs children are sought to serve on a committee that acts as a communication link among parents, teachers, and school administrators. The group, called the Eastern Upper Peninsula Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), will host two events this month to benefit special needs children.

County Budget Hearing To Be Dec. 11
      Mackinac County commissioners have prepared a $6.3 million budget for 2009, and it can be reviewed at the clerk's office. A public hearing will be Thursday, December 11, after which commissioners are expected to adopt the budget.

City Budget Hearing Will Be Dec. 15
      The St. Ignace city budget is available for review at City Hall, and a public hearing on it will be Monday, December 15. The city council is expected to adopt it following the hearing. St. Ignace is projecting a $7,358,769 budget for 2009, down 7.

Mackinac Island Group Working To Secure Hubbard's Annex Landmark Status
Lists 70+ Structures That Contribute
      A list of more than 70 items, photographs of structures and landmarks that were targeted as contributing to the history of Hubbard's Annex near the West Bluff, was officially accepted by the Mackinac Island City Council at its meeting Wednesday, November 19. It was the first step in securing status for the Annex as a National Historic Landmark (NHL).

Pay Reported for St. Ignace City Council Members
      In November, payment to members of the St. Ignace City Council for attending meeting and events totaled $2,320. Meeting salaries are set, while no rules constitute what events are eligible for payment. Council members are paid $70 for regular meetings, which are held on the first and third Monday of each month.

People Eligible for Unemployment Extension Will Be Notified by Mail
      The 63,000 unemployed Michigan workers who have exhausted their federally-funded unemployment benefits from this summer should receive letters with instructions for obtaining the newly approved federal benefit extension within the next two to three weeks, the state Department of Labor reported November 25.

Highway Department Closes St. Ignace Rest Area, 5 Others
      Six highway rest areas will be closed for winter, inculding the one on southbound I-75 at St. Ignace, which closed Monday, December 1. Six of the 81 rest areas in the state highway system will be closed, including those that are challenging to clear of snow and ice in winter, Michigan Department of Transportation announced Wednesday, November 26.

Sault Streets Opened to Snowmobiles
      The streets have been opened to snowmobiles in Sault Ste. Marie this year. The move was put in place by City Commission Monday, December 1, to welcome snowmobile enthusiasts to visit city lodging, restaurants, and entertainment. Groomed trails are connected to the city by a tunnel beneath I-75.

      A pediatric flu clinic will take place Wednesday, December 10, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bay Mills Health Center in Brimley. The clinic is for children needing booster shots and is only for ages six months to 18 years. The cost is $7; participants are asked to bring Medicaid or Blue Cross cards.
