Commodities Food To Be Distributed in EUP

Commodities food will be distributed in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Wednesday, December 10, through Friday, December 12. Food to be distributed includes applesauce, pinto beans, ground beef, kernel corn, flour mix, 1% milk, vegetable oil, peanut butter, pork patties, canned pumpkin, canned salmon, and trail mix. Persons receiving commodities must present an orange food card. Food will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Distribution is from 9 a.m. until noon, unless otherwise noted. Many centers will not remain open once the food is gone. Check with local centers in case of a schedule change.

The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, December 10

Drummond Island Township Hall, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Newberry Community Building, 11 a.m. to noon

Thursday, December 11

Pickford Township Hall, 8: a.m. to 10 a.m.

Raber Township Hall, Goetzville

Rudyard Community Center, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Sault Ste. Marie, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Sugar Island Community Center, 8: a.m. to 10 a.m.

Superior Township Hall, Brimley, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Whitefish Township Hall, Paradise, 8 a.m. to noon

Mackinac County Community Action Agency, St. Ignace, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Friday, December 12

Families who have not been recertified to receive the food or persons applying for the first time may apply or be re-certified at any Community Action office in Chippewa, Mackinac, or Luce counties. Applicants must provide proof of total household income, including wages, pensions, interest, unemployment or disability benefits, public assistance, and all other income, as well as Social Security numbers for all household members and proof of residency.

Eligibility is based on annual income, the limit for a single person younger than age 60 being $13,520. For each additional person younger than 60 in the home, add $4,680 to find the maximum allowable income. A single person 60 or older may receive up to $16,640 per year and remain eligible. For each additional person 60 or older in the home, add $5,760 to find the maximum allowable income. Commodities cards that are issued to senior citizens or handicapped persons will be specially marked so that a friend or relative may pick up the food.
