Lawrence McEvers
Lawrence H. McEvers of Engadine was a longtime Engadine businessman who was interested in U.P. river restoration and wildlife projects, and who founded the Trout Unlimited's Two Hearted Chapter. Mr. McEvers, 72, died Wednesday morning, December 17, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born May 16, 1936, in Clawson, he was the son of Harvey and Sigrid (nee Heavner) McEvers.
Mr. McEvers was a resident of Engadine for the past 36 years and owner of McEvers Insurance Agency for 28 years. Before establishing himself in Engadine, he resided in Lake Orion.
One of his most proud accomplishments was founding of the Trout Unlimited's Two Hearted Chapter. As an avid fly fisherman, Mr. McEvers also began the Horace Waters Fly Fishing School. He was a member of the Hiawatha Sportsman's Club and served as governor for four years. He was inspired to engage in local, state, and educational organizations to help make a difference in the Upper Peninsula's natural resources through river restoration projects and supporting numerous fish and wildlife projects.
He enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing and showing them the art of tying flies. Mr. McEvers also loved traveling and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Flora, of Engadine; seven children and their families, Jason and Trisha McEvers of Plymouth, Tracy and Chad Germain of Engadine, Cheryl Kruse, Cathleen and Larry Sherill, Constance Barnes, Cary and Lori McEvers, and Carl McEvers, all of Lake Orion; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and sisters Mary Cutajar and Joan Combs, both of Pontiac.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Calvin.
A gathering of family and friends took place Saturday December 20, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry.
