Roseanna Smith, 92, of Mackinaw City, was a teacher and a bookkeeper for Western Michigan University, before retiring and moving to Mackinaw City, where she was active in many community organizations and was a longtime volunteer for the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. Mrs. Smith died Monday, December 15, 2008, at Tendercare of Cheboygan.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois, September 20, 1916, to H. Harry and Antonia (nee Vesely) Berg. Mr. Berg died when she was very young, and her mother remarried Jacob Nemrava.

She attended school in Chicago and was graduated from Englewood High School in 1934. She was graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in teaching.

She married Lawton K. Smith December 22, 1940, at the First Congregational Church in Kalamazoo.

Mrs. Smith taught school in the Kalamazoo area for several years. She then became employed at Western Michigan University as bookkeeper for the school and the V-12 program, which was set up by the government to train pilots for the Army Air Corps during World War II.

While in Kalamazoo, Mrs. Smith was active in church women's organizations and also enjoyed the "Entre Nous" dance club.

She later went back to school at Michigan State University and received her master's degree in education in 1962.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith began coming to the Mackinaw City area in the early 1950s and moved there permanently in 1967 following their retirements.

She was a member of the Church of the Straits, The Church of the Straits Women's Club, the church choir, Greater Mackinaw City Area Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Headlands, Trails End Propriety Owners Association, a quilt club known as the "Bliss Bunch," Northland Players, Rivertown Follies, and helped for many years as a volunteer with the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk.

She is survived by her husband, Lawton; one daughter and her family, Susan and Greg Lint of Franklin, Massachusetts, and Mackinaw City; and a grandson, Peter Lint, and his fiancée, Ashley.

Service were held Friday, December 19, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City. Pastor David Wallis and the Reverend George Lewis officiated.

In lieu of flower, donations may be given to Church of the Straits, Mackinaw City, or St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Cheboygan.

Nordman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
