Missing Fishermen Found Safe Two fishermen who had been reported missing while ice fishing on Munuscong Lake were found by the United States Coast Guard at approximately 8 a.m. Saturday, December 29. Both men were found in good health. Stephen Bielat, 17, of St. Ignace, and Randy Lee, 24, of Wyoming, Michigan, had been last heard from by family members at 5 p.m. Friday, December 28. While attempting to leave the ice after dark, the two became lost in inclement weather, when a wrong turn led them toward open water. After the four wheeler they were riding on broke through the ice and became stuck, the men decided to set up their fishing shanty and wait out the night. Michigan State Police and the Coast Guard were called out to search for the men. Michigan State Police has issued the following safety tips for ice users: • Before venturing onto the ice, check with local sources for the most up-to-date information on ice conditions. • Note that when the temperature stays above freezing for more than 24 hours, ice begins to lose strength. • Avoid areas where there are inlets or outlets owing to moving water under the ice. • Avoid areas where there are natural springs. Avoid ice around structures, docks, and pilings. • Pay attention to wind direction, especially when fishing on large bodies of water. Wind can blow the ice out and away from shore, leaving anglers stranded. • Always give friends or family detailed information on where you plan to fish, and update them if that information changes. |
