Rudyard Trio Combines for 61 Points in Win Over Saints

The trio of Arik Hesselink, Craig Wallis, and Jeff Briggs combined for 61 points to lead the host Rudyard Bulldogs to a 76-45 Straits Area Conference (SAC) win over the St. Ignace Saints Thursday, January 3.

"Rudyard played well and got off to a fast start," said Saints Coach Doug Ingalls.

Wallis scored 10 points as the Bulldogs raced out to a 16-8 lead after the first eight minutes. Rudyard outscored St. Ignace, which dropped to 3-1 in the SAC and 5-2 on the season, 20-10 in the second quarter to increase the advantage to 36-18 at halftime as Wallis chipped in seven points and Hesselink added six.

Rudyard, 2-2 in the SAC and 5- 2 overall, continued to dominate with a 21-12 margin in the third quarter as Hesselink scored 11 and Briggs charted eight to build the Bulldogs' lead to 57-30. The team held a 19-15 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Cedarville Continues To Roll

With Win Over Posen

Cedarville notched a 91-58 non-conference win over Posen Saturday, January 5.

The Trojans, 7-0 on the season, took control with a 52-28 halftime lead and outscored the Vikings 39-30 in the second half to record their 33rd consecutive win over two seasons.

Trojans statistics: C.J. Paquin, 32 points, six rebounds, six assists, four steals; Jason Duncan, 19 points, four assists, three steals; Jordan Duncan, 15 points, five assists, four steals; Sheldon Tassier, 11 points, six assists; Kevin Thompson, six points; Taylor Smith, five points; James Mitchell, two points; Luke Murray, one point.

Cedarville will entertain St. Ignace Wednesday, January 9, travel to DeTour Friday, January 11, and play at Rogers City Tuesday, January 15.

Panthers Edge Eagles

in EUPC Boys Hoops

Pickford Panthers improved to 2-1 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) and 2-4 overall with a 73-70 league win over the Engadine Eagles Thursday, January 3.

The second quarter made the difference as Engadine held a 15- 12 scoring edge after the first eight minutes before the Panthers outscored the Eagles 26-17 in the second stanza, for a 38-32 halftime advantage. When we had an offensive run, Pickford would answer," said Eagles Coach Elmer Albright. "We gave up too many easy shots in the second half."

Engadine, 2-2 in the EUPC and 4-4 on the season, cut the Panthers' lead to 51-49 after three quarters with a 17-13 margin. The Eagles tied the score in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump as Pickford held a 22-21 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Pickford scored 27 field goals, four triples for 58 points, and made 15 of 20 from the free throw line. Engadine made 28 field goals, two treys for 58 points, and connected on 12 of 21 from the charity stripe.

Hoops Victories

On the road for two games, DeTour Raiders improved to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) after defeating Brimley 54-50 in a league contest Thursday, January 3, and upending the Alba Wildcats 80-38 in a non-conference match-up Friday, January 5.

The third quarter made the difference in the Raiders' road win over the Bays. Brimley led 16- 11 after the first eight minutes and held a 25-23 halftime edge before DeTour outscored the Bays 17-9 in the third quarter for a 40-34 score, and posted a four-point win.

"We changed our defense in the third quarter from the first half, and that was the difference," said Coach Craig Miller.

The free throw line was key as DeTour made 14 of 28, while Brimley connected on eight of 16.

Raiders statistics: Nathan Klamerus, 13 points, eight rebounds; Tyler Anderson, 11 points, five steals, three assists; Josh Wilson, nine points; Andy Dyal, six points, four rebounds; Ian Burton, six points; Teryn Miller, five points, four rebounds; Thomas Worden, four points, five steals, four assists.

Raiders Down Wildcats

In the win over Alba, the Raiders led 47-23 and outscored the Wildcats 33-15 in the second half to post the non-league win.

Comets Girls, Boys

Drop NLC Contests

Mackinaw City girls and boys dropped Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) contests. The girls team fell to the Alanson Vikings 33-28 Friday, January 4, and the boys team was defeated by the Ellsworth Lancers 58-37 Thursday, January 3.

Mackinaw City girls, 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the NLC, trailed 19- 13 at halftime before the Comets cut the final score to five with a 15- 14 scoring edge in the second half.

The Comets led by two points with 1:10 left in the game, but could not hold the lead.

"We had our chances, but down the stretch, we missed our free throws and Alanson connected on their shots," said Comets Coach Paul Wallin. "It didn't help that we had some girls with illness."

Game to Lancers

Mackinaw City was outscored 29-11 in the combined second and third quarters, leading to the NLC defeat at Ellsworth.

The Comets, 4-2 overall and 3- 1 in the NLC, led 16-13 after the first eight minutes, but in the second quarter they failed to score as the Lancers took a 20-16 halftime advantage.

Ellsworth outscored Mackinaw City 22-11 in the third quarter, for a 42-27 lead, and completed the league contest with a 16-10 margin in the final eight minutes.

"We got in foul trouble and had to sit two starters for most of the second quarter," said Comets Coach Garth Law. "Overall, I was pleased with our effort, but we need to keep the starters on the floor."

Comets statistics: Logan Paquet, 15 points, four assists, four rebounds, three steals; Austin Martin, 10 points; Klaus Jaggi, four points, six rebounds; Barry Paquet, three points, four rebounds, two steals; Luke Alexander, three points; Zach Milholin, two points, five rebounds.

Mackinaw City girls will travel to Vanderbilt Monday, January 14.

Free Throws Lift Eagles

Over Panthers in EUPC

Engadine Eagles, holding a 20- 8 advantage from the free throw line, defeated the Pickford Panthers 59-50 during an Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference girls contest Friday, January 4.

"This was a big win for us," said Eagles Coach Daryl Browning. "This is my first year and I feel we finally understand each other and are playing team basketball. We are having the confidence in each other as coach and players."

The Eagles, 5- 3 on the season and 2-2 in the EUPC, held a 19-16 lead after the first eight minutes and increased the advantage to 29-23 at halftime, with a 10-7 scoring edge in the second quarter.

Engadine continued to extend the lead over Pickford, 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in the league, with a 14-12 margin in the third quarter for a 43-35 advantage, and closed out the contest with a 16-15 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Eagles statistics: Lauren Mac- Arthur, 27 points, nine rebounds; Shauni Rutledge, 11 points, eight rebounds; Shannon Browning, nine points; Elisa Hobbs, five points, 13 rebounds; Kacie Rutledge, five points, four assists; Brenda Albrecht, two points.
