Digital T.V. To Fully Replace Analog by February 2009 All television broadcast stations will switch to digital, rather than analog, broadcast signals next year, February 17, 2009, under federal law. Viewers who receive free overthe air television signals through antennas or "rabbit ears" will be affected, reported WCMU public broadcasting station. Television sets connected to cable or satellite may or may not be affected, and cable or satellite providers will be able to provide specific information. Viewers will be able to buy converter boxes to use with their old televisions, or subscribe to cable or satellite services. Some televisions, if purchased fairly recently, may have a built-in digital tuner, and viewers may check their owner's manual for more information. A federal program set up to assist in the transition to digital broadcasting will make some discounted converter boxes available, WCMU reported January 9. Converter boxes are estimated to cost $50 to $75. People can apply for up to two coupons per household. Limited coupons will be available. "WCMU is encouraging viewers to take action immediately, before the limited supply of coupons runs out," said Rick Schudiske of WCMU. Viewers can visit www.DTV 2009.gov or call (888) 388-2009 to apply for a $40 coupon to help defray the cost of the converter box. Those who would like more information about the change may call WCMU at (800) 727-9268 to receive a fact sheet on the transition. |
