St. Ignace Posts Come- from-behind SAC Win Over Cheboygan

St. Ignace junior Anthony Lester scored a career-high 26 points, including shooting 15 of 16 (93 percent) from the free throw line to help gain a comefrom behind 70-64 victory against the Straits Area Conference (SAC) foe Cheboygan Chiefs Friday, January 11.
The Saints trailed 21-6 at 2:37 of the first quarter before scoring 18 unanswered points and making 25-of-32 (78%) from the free throw line, carrying St. Ignace to the SAC win.
St. Ignace, 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the league, scored the final eight points of the first eight minutes to slice the Chiefs' lead to 21-14, and opened the second quarter with a 10-0 scoring run during the first two minutes for a 24-21 advantage as Lester scored eight points, while James Peterson added four, and Kyle Smock and Nick Montie chipped in two each.
The Saints led 34-29 at halftime, but Cheboygan established a 19-15 scoring edge in the third quarter to cut the Saints' lead to 49-48 going into the final eight minutes, as Gerrit Mortensen drained three triples to boost the Saints offense.

Cheboygan tied the score at 51 early in the fourth quarter, but the Saints' 17 of 21 points came from free throws, that included Lester's 11 of 12 free throw shooting performance, lifting St. Ignace to a 21-16 margin for a six-point win.
Team scoring: St. Ignace, 20 field goals made, five triples (45 points), and 25 of 32 free throws; Cheboygan: 25 field goals made, seven triples (57 points), and 7 of 14 free throws.

The Cedarville Trojans continue to be perfect during the season after defeating the St. Ignace Saints 85-57 during a non-league contest Wednesday, January 9. The Trojans also knocked off the conference foe DeTour Raiders 63-30 Friday, January 11.
Cedarville is ranked number one in the Upper Peninsula Class D boys basketball poll and second in the state, remaining undefeated on the season with a 9-0 overall record, posting a 4-0 record in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference

Win Over Saints
Ten players scored for Coach David Duncan as the Trojans took control in the first quarter en route to a 28-point non-conference win over the Saints.
Cedarville took a 22-12 lead after the first eight minutes and outscored St. Ignace 23-11 in the second quarter, for a 45-23 halftime margin, as C.J. Paquin scored 16 points and Sheldon Tassier added 13 for the Trojans. Gerrit Mortensen scored 10 points for the Saints.
The Trojans held a 14-8 scoring edge in the third quarter to increase their lead to 59-31 before both offenses reached high gear, scoring 26 points each in the final eight minutes.
Team scoring: Cedarville, 35 field goals made, six triples, and 9 of 15 free throws; St. Ignace, 21 field goals made, three triples, and 12 of 21 free throws.

The Pickford Panthers boys basketball team improved to 4-4 on the season, and 3-1 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC), after a 71-60 win over the Brimley Bays Friday, January 11. The Panthers also defeated the Newberry Indians 70- 48 in a non-conference contest Tuesday, January 8.
Panthers Overcome "Flu Bug,"
Fouls
"The flu bug and fouls hit our team, but we had some people step up," said Panthers Head Coach Shawn Bennin. The flu bug affected two players and two starters were in foul trouble.
Pickford trailed by 11 points at one point in the first half, as the Bays held a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes, however, the Panthers established a 19-13 advantage in the second quarter for a 27-26-halftime edge.
The Panthers outscored Brimley 19-14 in the third quarter and completed the non-league win with a 25-20 margin in the final eight minutes.

The Rudyard Bulldogs boys basketball team improved to 3-2 in the Straits Area Conference (SAC), and 7-2 overall on the season, after a 52-45 league win over the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils Friday, January 11.
The Bulldogs led 24-19 at halftime and held a 28-26 scoring edge in the second half.

The Engadine Eagles boys basketball team fell to the Rapid River Rockets 61-50 in a non-conference contest Monday, January 7.
The Eagles trailed 11-9 after the first eight minutes and 23-20 at halftime, following a 12-11 Rockets scoring edge in the second quarter. The Rockets outscored Engadine 38-30 in the second half.
