DeTour Area This year, February has 29 days, instead of the usual 28 days. Friends of the Library announced the annual Silent Auction will be Wednesday, February 13, the day before Valentine's Day. Last year's auction broke all records in funds raised. This year's items up for auction include donations from local merchants, gift certificates for new publications, for meals, gas, and services, items created by local artists, collectibles, and an overnight stay on Mackinac Island. If you would like to donate an item, contact Sandy Wytiaz at (906) 297-6801. Boxes of homemade candies and other Valentine candies will also be available for purchase throughout the afternoon and evening. Friends of the Library have scheduled speakers for 2008. James Kelly of Drummond Island and co-author of the Jill Traynor mystery series will speak Wednesday, January 30, at 6:30 p.m., at the library. The fourth book of the series, "New America," appeared last summer. Another E.U.P. author, Arthur Brood from Rudyard, will give a reading from his book, "The Mud Hole," Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. to students, and answer questions. The book, a historical novel for children ages eight to 12, includes interesting facts, history, and photos of early automobiles and classic cars. The book will not only appeal to the students, but to parents and grandparents, as well. Scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. is Craig Miller and two Boy Scouts, who will make a presentation about their experiences at The Philmont Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico. Spring and summer programs with tentative dates include Lisa Ellis Tarr on wildflowers and a July 30 presentation by Graham and Bonnie Mackintosh on Graham's latest book, all to be held at the library. There will be a presentation by Pixie Houghwout and Ralph Folsom August 6. The 2008 Membership Drive for the Friends of the Library is now underway. Dues are $10 per person. Members of the E.U.P. Fine Arts Council are now meeting and planning a summer production. Birthday greetings to Millie Reed, who turned 10 years old Monday, January 28. Sincere get well wishes to Betty Selvius, who is in Mayo Clinic. A thought: Formula for youth - keep your enthusiasm and forget your birthdays. |
