Engadine Hello, everyone. Can you believe it's February already, and only four more weeks until spring. With the mild weather Monday, and rain we received that evening, it really knocked down the snow again, but if the storm hits, as reported, by the time you read this, the snow levels will be back up, which will be good for the I-500 this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. There will be bingo Thursday, January 31, at the Newton Township Hall in Gould City. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with bingo at 7 p.m. Players must be 18 years old. The Newberry Eagles Club will have a fish fry Friday, February 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the club on M-28 in Newberry. Winter Fest at Tahquamenon Falls State Park is scheduled for Saturday, February 2. The third annual Youth Basketball Tournament will be Saturday, February 2, and Sunday, February 3, at the J.L. DeCook High School gymnasium in Newberry. There will be 20 boys and girls teams, fourth grade through sixth grade, from Newberry, Engadine, Manistique, Munising, Gladstone, Marquette, and Ishpeming, who will participate in a double elimination format. Games are set to begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 9:30 p.m. Games will continue Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. First place awards and medals will be presented Sunday. The public is invited to watch our area youth compete. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children. A concession stand will be provided. Tournament T-shirts will be for sale, and there will be raffles throughout the weekend. Don't miss the Winterfest Ski Plane Fly-In at the Luce County Airport, Saturday, February 9, at 11 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the event will be Sunday, February 10. There is no charge for admission. All-you-can-eat lumberjack stew will be provided by the Newberry Lions Club. Cost is a $10 donation for adults and $5 for children. There will be a groomed runway for ski planes, water balloon drop contest, snowmobile rental, and car rental. A Newberry senior citizens dinner will be Tuesday, February 12, at 5 p.m. at the Elks. Cost is $5. Anyone attending should be signed up by Tuesday, February 5, at the senior building in Newberry. "One Lunger Antique Snowmobile, Snowmobile Race" will be Saturday, February 23, at 10 a.m. at the Luce County Fairgrounds. Registration must be in by Thursday, January 31. Events include a chili cook-off, music, food booths, bake sale, games, cake walk, piñata, ice golfing, turkey bowling, youth mini sled challenge, Curtis Fish Coop ice fishing, and a fireworks display sponsored by Three Lakes Area Fireworks Council. Curtis Women's Club, formerly the Curtis Ladies Aid, has officially changed its name. Monthly luncheon meetings, fun, and community work will continue. Upper Peninsula Single District 10 Lions Club is collecting used computer ink cartridges (except Epson) to help raise money for the 2008 Curtis Independence Day parade. Cartridges may be placed in designated boxes at the Fish and Hunt Shop in Curtis, Curtis Elementary, Manistique Lakes Clinic, State Savings Bank in Curtis, Naubinway, and Manistique, Jack's Supervalue in Manistique, Newberry High School, and First National Bank in Newberry.
