St. Ignace Girls Snap Four-game Losing Streak

The St. Ignace girls basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 55-32 non-conference win over the Pickford Panthers Tuesday, January 22. In the Straits Area Conference Thursday, January 24, the Saints downed the Rogers City Hurons 49-23 to improve to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the SAC.

"We have lost some tough games against Gaylord, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Sault Ste. Marie, but we were in all those games," said Saints Coach Dorene Ingalls. "Everyone played well at Pickford. It was a good effort to get back on the winning track."

St. Ignace took a 18-8 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 10-8 scoring edge in the second quarter for a 28-16 halftime advantage as Nicole Elmblad scored 12 to lead the Saints. Jasmine Ledy led the Panthers with five first-half points.

Nine players scored for Coach Ingalls. Abalanced offense continued in the second half, as St. Ignace outscored Pickford 17-10 in the third quarter and closed out the contest with a 10-6 margin.

"I was also pleased with our rebounding, as nine girls totaled 44 boards," said Coach Ingalls.

Transition Defense Lifts

Saints Over Hurons

Almost half of Coach Ingalls' squad did not dress for the game owing to either illness or injuries. Amanda Coveyou, Brooke Allan, and Jodie Langstaff were suffering with the flu, and Marcie Rickley (did not play), Jessica Massaway, and Cheslea Swope suffered injuries, however, the Saints' transition defense held the Hurons to single-digit scoring in the fourth quarter, which earned the Saints a conference win.

Coveyou left the game early in the fourth quarter and never returned, but the junior played strong with seven blocked shots and outstanding on defense.

The Saints opened the game with a 14-5 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 13-9 scoring edge in the second quarter for a 27-14 hafltime advantage.

Cheslea Swope, Mallory La- Londe, and Nicole Elmblad knocked down triples to begin the third quarter, building the advantage to 36-15. The Saints cruised to a victory from there as Rogers City fell to 2-11 overall and 0-7 in the SAC.

Saints JV Team Posts Two Wins

The St. Ignace junior varsity team defeated Pickford 61-35 and Rogers City 42-26.

The Saints will travel to Newberry to take on the Indians Friday, February 1, and to Brimley Tuesday, February 5, before returning home to entertain Rudyard Thursday, February 7.

With Win Over Eagles

The Cedarville Trojans girls basketball team maintained its lead in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) with a 61-58 overtime win over the Engadine Eagles Thursday, January 24.

The Trojans improved to 6-0 in the EUPC and 13-1 overall, while the Eagles fell to 2-3 in the conference and 9-4 on the season.

"The girls kept their composure, especially in the overtime period," said Trojans Coach Sonja Duncan. "This was a good win on the road."

Engadine led 18-12 after the first eight minutes before Cedarville held a 15-12 scoring edge in the second quarter to cut the Eagles' lead to 30-27 at halftime.

The Trojans cut the lead to 44- 43 after three quarters with a 16- 14 scoring advantage, sending the game into overtime with an 18-17 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Cedarville outscored Engadine 10-7 in the fourminute extra period as Jessie Duncan and Ashley Sweeney scored three-point field goals and Caitlin Wright and Billie McLeod scored a two-point baskets.

"The game was tight to the end," said Eagles Coach Daryl Browning. "The girls played hard and they showed me a lot of heart."

The Engadine Eagles junior varsity girls team is 13-0 on the season after defeating Cedarville 50-33 Thursday, January 24, Newberry 70-47 January 14, Mid Peninsula 49-16 January 12, and Big Bay de Noc 36-32 January 11.

Away From .500 Record

The Mackinac Island Lakers girls basketball team split its Northern Lights League (NLL) weekend series with Paradise, losing 32-25 Friday, January 25, before defeating the Rockets 26- 22 Saturday, January 26.

The Lakers (7-8 overall) continue to improve for first-year Coach Mary Patay.

"This group of girls continue to get better and their record shows with strong work ethics," said Coach Patay "Who would have thought that we would be one game away from the 500 mark after 15 games?"

Mackinac Island suffered through a disappointing third quarter Friday that led to the Rockets' win. The Rockets outscored the Lakers 19-4 in the third quarter for a 29-17 lead, and Mackinac Island never recovered.

Paradise led 8- 6 after the first eight minutes of the game before the Lakers held a 7-2 advantage in the second quarter for a 13-10 Mackinac Island lead.

Lakers Reverse Effort

The Lakers turned things around Saturday to earn a split with the Rockets.

"The girls wanted this win after the disappointing setback Friday," said Coach Patay. "We stepped it up a notch and played better defense, and Jane Finkel lifted the offense with her outside shooting."

Both teams scored four points in the first eight minutes before the Rockets held a 12-8 advantage in the second quarter for a 16-12 halftime lead.

The Lakers cut the Paradise lead to 20-19 after three quarters with a 7-4 scoring run and, in the final eight minutes, Mackinac Island held the Rockets to two points while scoring seven to secure the win.

Engadine in EUPC;

Upend Yellowjackets

The Brimley girls basketball team needed the home win against Engadine to stay within striking distance of Cedarville in the race for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) title, and the Bays took care of business with a 67-56 win over the Engadine Eagles Saturday, January 28.

The Bays defeated Vanderbilt 52-34 during a non-conference game to improve to 11-2 overall and 3-2 in the EUPC, while the Eagles fell to 8-5 on the season and 2-4 in the league.

Aikens, Graham Record

43 Combined Points

Amber Aikens and Jessica Graham combined for 43 points to lift the Bays to a EUPC win over the Eagles.

Brimley held a 12-11 scoring edge after the first eight minutes before Engadine took a 24-23- halftime lead with a 13-11 run in the second quarter.

The Bays turned up the offensive burner in the second half by outscoring the Eagles 44-36, including a 23-16 scoring advantage in the third quarter and 21-16 scoring advantage in the final eight minutes to earn the conference win.

"We picked up the pace of the game in the second half and that was the difference of us," said Bays Coach Ray Bell.

The Bays and Yellowjackets both scored 20 points in the first half, but Brimley outscored Vanderbilt 32-14 in the second half to record the non-league win.

Nine Players Score in Panthers

Win Over Raiders

The defense of the Pickford Panthers girls basketball team held the DeTour Raiders to just one free throw in the third quarter, carrying the Panthers to a 57-33 Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) win on the road.

"I was pleased with our defensive effort," said Panthers Coach Becky Arbic. "We executed the little things that don't show up in the scoring sheet. That was important."

Pickford (3-3 in the EUPC and 6-8 overall) held a 12-4 lead over DeTour (0-5 in the EUPC, 3-10 overall) after the first eight minutes and maintained the eightpoint halftime advantage after both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter.

The Panthers increased the lead to 39-17 after three quarters with a 15-1 scoring run and closed out the game with an 18-16 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Fall to HLC

The Mackinaw City Comets girls basketball team fell to Harbor Light Christian 54-14 during a Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) contest Tuesday, January 22.

The Comets trailed 26-6 at halftime, and Harbor Light Christian outscored Mackinaw City 28-8 in the second half to post the NLC win.
