Trojans'Winning Streak

at 40 Wins

The Cedarville Trojans boys basketball team reached a new plateau with its 40th consecutive win, which spans the past two seasons. The Trojans earned the milestone win with a 72-41 Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) decision at Brimley Thursday, January 31, and also upended the Rudyard Bulldogs 90-48 during a non-conference game Tuesday, January 29.

The Trojans (7-0 in the EUPC, 14-0 overall) are ranked number one in the State and Upper Peninsula polls.

Brimley fell to 1-5 in the EUPC and 3-12 on the season.

Remaining regular season games for the Trojans include against Harbor Springs, Flint International Academy, Rogers City, DeTour, Rudyard, and Boyne City.

"We continue to play hard and the success comes from team basketball," said Trojans Coach David Duncan.

Cedarville raced to a 38-7 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 15-14 scoring edge in the second quarter for a 53-21 halftime lead. The Bays outscored the more relaxed Trojans 20-19 in the second half.

Second-Quarter Offense

Lifts Trojans Over Bulldogs

The Trojans held a 25-16 lead after the first eight minutes before outscoring Rudyard 34-8 in the second quarter to build a 59-24 lead by at halftime.

The Trojans maintained the large lead with a 31-24 scoring edge in the second half.

Eagles Earn EUPC Road

Win Over Raiders

To spark his Engadine Eagles boys basketball before a conference match-up against the DeTour Raiders Thursday, January 31, Coach Elmer Albright approached the team before the game to challenge their determination. The message was received. The Eagles responded with a 64-54 road win.

"I sent a message to the team before this game and they responded with a strong effort on offense and defense," said Coach Albright.

The Eagles (4-3 in the EUPC, 6-7 overall) led 17-12 after the first eight minutes and outscored the Raiders 24-10 to build a 41-22 halftime advantage.

The second quarter was huge for Engadine as DeTour held a 32- 23 scoring advantage in the second half to slice the Eagles' 19- point lead to 10 points, but Coach Albright's team did not allow DeTour to get any closer.

Lakers Boys Continue

Undefeated Season

The Mackinac Island Lakers boys basketball team continues its perfect season with a Northern Lights League (NLL) sweep of the Grand Marais Polar Bears 75-44 Friday, February 1, and 82-55 Saturday, February 2.

The Lakers, 16-0 on the season and 8-0 in the NLL, will look to finish the season undefeated as they host their final two games of the regular season with a weekend series against Beaver Island Friday, February 15, and Saturday, February 16.

2nd Half Offense Key to Win

The Lakers held a 13-12-scor- ing edge after the first eight minutes Friday and increased the lead to 35-25 with a 22-13 advantage in the second quarter before outscoring the Polar Bears 40-19 in the second half to post the league win.

Lakers statistics: Michael Gamble, 19 points; Riley Chaffee, 18 points; Tyler McLean, 16 points; Robert Chambers, 14 points; Woody Beardsley, eight points.

Bearsley Scores 27 in Win Lakers senior Woody Beardsley scored 27 points in the win over Grand Marais Saturday.

Mackinac Island led 15-12 and 34-29 at halftime before outscoring the Polar Bears 48-26 in the second half.

Comets Down Swordsmen,

Panthers

The Mackinaw City Comets earned two victories last week, defeating the Harbor Light Christian Swordsmen 64-48 in a Northern Lights Conference (NLC) contest Monday, January 28, and the Pickford Panthers 65- 61 in a non-conference game Thursday, January 31.

The Comets (9-1 in the NLC, 11-2 overall) will host Ellsworth Wednesday, February 6, in an NLC showdown and Alba Friday, February 8.

Second Quarter Key at HLC

The second quarter was the key for Mackinaw City in the road win over Harbor Light Christian, as the Comets led 17-13 after the first eight minutes, outscoring the Swordsmen 23-11 in the second quarter for a 40-24-halftime lead.

The Comets held a 9-7-scoring edge in the third quarter before the Swordsmen closed out the game with a 16-15 scoring advantage in the final eight minutes.

"They were both good wins, as everyone scored for us," said Comets Coach Garth Law. "Against Harbor Light, Logan Paquet scored 10 points and the team added three triples in the second quarter."

Difference in Comets'Win

Mackinaw City trailed 45-44 after three quarters before outscoring Pickford 21-16 in the final eight minutes to post the win.

The Comets led 16-14 after the first eight minutes and built the lead to 37-25 at halftime with a 21-11 scoring edge in the second quarter. The Panthers (4-12 overall) outscored Mackinaw City 20- 7 in the third quarter, however, to take a one-point lead into the final period.

Bulldogs Fall To Chiefs

in SAC Match-up

Craig Wallis' 23 points was not enough for the Rudyard Bulldogs to overpower the Cheboygan Chiefs during a Straits Area Conference (SAC) game, which the Bulldogs lost 66-54 Thursday, January 31.

"We played well for three quarters, but couldn't sustain the intensity," said Bulldogs Coach Grant Ross.

Rudyard (5-3 in the SAC, 10-4 overall) led 18-14 after the first eight minutes before Cheboygan held a 16-15-scoring edge in the second quarter, slicing the Bulldogs' lead to 33-30 at halftime.

The Chiefs (7-1 in the SAC, 9-5 overall) took a 47-46 lead after three quarters with a 17-13 scoring advantage, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-8 in the final eight minutes.

Raiders Fall to Black Bears

The DeTour Raiders boys basketball team fell to the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears during a road non-conference game Saturday, February 2.

The teams battled to a 26-26 score during the first half after the Black Bears held a 13-9 scoring advantage at the end of the first eight minutes. The Raiders outscored Big Bay de Noc 17-13 in the second quarter.

Big Bay de Noc took control in the third quarter with a 22-8 scoring advantage. DeTour closed the game out with a 16-14 scoring advantage in the final eight minutes.
