DeTour Area
By Barbara Buschbacher 297-8075 bbann@sault.com

Another blast of winter temperatures hovering around zero and below zero readings, with strong winds, hit our area last weekend.

The DeTour Hunt and Fish club will host the annual Fishing Contest Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17.

Saturday is free fishing day, when no license is needed. Anglers may pre-register at the DeTour Building Center, or may register at the trailer on site on South Caribou Lake Road. The registration fee is $10, of which there will be a 70% payback to contest winners.

The hours of the contest Saturday will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon. Prizes will be awarded for the largest pike, perch, or walleye, and for those weighing the most. Fish must be alive when brought in to be weighed.

All prizes and the 50/50 drawings will be awarded at the clubhouse Sunday at noon. This contest has always been very popular in the area.

Some avid fishermen are reluctant to put up a fishing shanty on the ice, so this is a great time to get out and do some ice fishing and perhaps win. For more information, call Don Marlett at (906) 297-5382.

Coming up this week is the silent auction, Wednesday, February 13, at the school library, sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Items up for auction include donations from local merchants, gift certificates for publications, meals, gas, and other services, items created by local artisans and local artists, collectibles, an overnight stay on Mackinac Island, and many more items.

In addition to the auction items, boxes of homemade candies and other Valentine candies will be available for purchase throughout the afternoon and evening. If you would like to make a donation, contact Sandy Wytiaz at (906) 297-6801.

There have been inquiries as to where to send get well greetings to Betty Selvius. Cards may be sent to: Betty Selvius, St. Mary's Hospital, 1216 Second Street South West, Rochester, MN 55902.

It is good news to hear Mrs. Selvius is making progress with her recovery. We wish her continued progress.

A thought: Work is for those who don't know how to fish.
