Happy Valentine's Day to all. Hope your sweethearts are all good to you.

There will be an ice fishing derby Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17, at McDonald Lake in Gulliver, with three prizes awarded in three categories: longest perch, longest pike, and longest walleye. Prizes will be awarded to youth and adults.

The Curtis Winter Carnival is Saturday, February 16, with the first event starting at 10 a.m. at the Curtis Fish Coop.

There will be fishing for children and adults and a Ladies Aid bake sale. There will be games at 11 a.m. for adults and kids, turkey bowling, ice golf, upper curling (weather permitting), and a cookie walk. There is no charge for children's games.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be a chili cook-off; 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., children's pinata; 2:30 p.m., kid's mini sled challenge (no charge).

There will be food vendors all day, a snow sculpture contest, and fireworks at dusk, sponsored by Three Lakes Fireworks.

The Manistique Lakes Lions Club will have a pancake breakfast Sunday, February 17, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Portage Township Community Building. There is a $3 charge to purchase a button to be admitted on the ice.

Congratulations to the "Hulbert Haulers," who raised $28,000 for E.U.P. Special Olympics.

The group from downstate who have combined the love of snowmobiling with a commitment to raise funds for Special Olympics. The group formed in 1982 as a means of supporting Special Olympics. Each member is responsible for his or her own expenses, and 100% of the money they raise goes to the local Special Olympics. The Volunteers-in-Mission team of the Newberry and Engadine United Methodist Churches will host a benefit "Winter's Night by Candlelight" Saturday evening, February 16, at the Newberry United Methodist Church. Suggested donation is $12.50 per person, and sittings are at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Newberry United Methodist Church or from a mission team member. The public is welcome.

The four-course dinner is to raise funds for rebuilding on Louisiana's Gulf Coast following the devastating hurricanes in 2005. The proceeds will be used to purchase building supplies and materials that will be used by volunteers from Newberry and Engadine United Methodist Churches, when they journey to Louisiana next month to help affected residents rebuild their homes and their lives.

Artists are invited to join the 50th annual "Art on the Rocks" Saturday, July 26, and Sunday, July 27, sponsored by the Lake Superior Art Association. Applications are currently available online at www.artontherocks.org, or send a SASE envelope to: AOR, P.O. Box 9, Marquette, MI 49855.
