Eastern U.P. Schools Will Host Winter Games Feb. 23 Area schools will host the 42nd annual Winter Games in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Saturday, February 23. The Winter Games are social, recreational, and competitive events that will bring together approximately 500 fifth through 12th grade students to participate in various sports. Events offered include bowling, swimming, basketball, chess, snowboarding, and dodgeball. Age divisions are elementary, junior high, and senior high. In some events, try-outs are held, while in other events, try-outs may not be necessary. Information is available within each local school. The day will begin with opening ceremonies at the Pickford High School Gymnasium at 9:30 a.m. Students will then be transported to their respective competition sites. Events will be held at schools in St. Ignace, Rudyard, Sault Ste. Marie, Pickford, Cedarville, DeTour, and Brimley. Following the competition, parents will be responsible for transporting their children home from the events. The Eastern Upper Peninsula Community School Winter Games are being sponsored by Consolidated Community School Services (CCSS), Straits Area Community Education, Sault Area Schools, and JKL Bahweting School. Schools sending athletes to the games will include JLK Bahweting, Brimley Area Schools, Les Cheneaux Community Schools, DeTour Area Schools, Engadine Consolidated Schools, Moran Township Schools, Pickford Public Schools, Rudyard Area Schools, Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools, St. Ignace Area Schools, St. Mary's Parish Catholic School, Tahquamenon Area Schools, and Whitefish Township Schools. |
