Leigh Anne Leveille of St. Ignace was honored for obtaining gainful employment through a Michigan Works! agency at the 2008 Alumni Celebration of Michigan Works! Association Wednesday, January 30, at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing.

Ms. Leveille was among the 25 graduates of the Michigan Works! system who were presented with an Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award by her district legislators, State Senator Jason Allen and Representative Gary McDowell.

Each year, the association hosts this celebration to highlight the success stories of the system. The presentation features individuals who, with assistance from the agency, have sought gainful employment through education or new training in high-demand occupations and emerging fields.

The agency noted that when Ms. Leveille first came to the Eastern Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! Service Center in St. Ignace, she was trying to complete prerequisites for a registered nursing program at a college more than 40 miles away from her home. In addition to driving an hour to school, she was also a single mother of two children, and she tried to work as much as possible. To help her achieve her goals, counselors joined forces and Ms. Leveille received assistance with transportation, child care, and educational expenses. She was graduated as a registered nurse in 2004.

Ms. Leveille was offered parttime employment at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace. She was then promoted to a full-time nursing position at the hospital.

Michigan Works! Association was established in 1987 to foster high-quality employment and training programs serving employers and workers by providing support activities and a forum for information exchange for Michigan's workforce development system. That system has been recognized by the National Alliance of Business as the most innovative in the country.
