Engadine Consolidated Schools
HOME OF THE EAGLES • KNOWLEDGE LETS YOU SOAR
by Stu Hobbs Superintendent

Engadine Consolidated Schools will be out of session from March 3 to March 7 for spring break. This break is not in sequence with other E.U.P. school districts that are off school from March 31 though April 4. It was necessary to change our spring break window to meet an elementary testing need. The senior trip is still scheduled for March 31 to April 4. Those seniors not attending the senior trip are expected to attend school during that week.

The girls and boys basketball teams have ended their season. The girls were eliminated last week in district competitions with their defeat by Superior Central. The girls have had a very positive season and next year is expected to be even better. Boys basketball districts began February 27. Good luck, Eagles. It takes the efforts of many coaches, volunteers, our athletic director, and the sports boosters to provide continued support to our sports programs.

Spring sports are scheduled to begin in mid-April. April 21 is the first meet at Cedarville for varsity golf, and track formally begins on April 17 when our team participates in the Marquette regional track meet.

Engadine Schools sponsored both a junior and senior high band this year to participate in the Michigan Band and Orchestra Association competition. Our junior high band received a rating of a 2. The high school band received a score of 1, which qualified the band to participate at the state level. They will play in late April. The Engadine band has not made it to state level competitions since 1995. Bravo Eagles, bravo!

We recently received the results of the Michigan Merit Examination. Juniors took the test last fall. The test covers English/Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Individual student results will be mailed to parents shortly. One assessed content area that continues to be a concern for us is written language. In response to this weakness, we will provide training to all teachers (K-12) to discuss and adopt a written language program by the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.

March is Reading Month in the elementary school. This year's theme is "Fly like an Eagle....Read!" The month will include reading contests and other class and school activities. The next time you have time, sit down and read with your student. You'll be an Eagle, too.

The high school staff has begun the process of developing year-end core content area assessments, as mandated by the state. This will be a lengthy endeavor. Testing begins at the end of this school year for certain grades and subjects.

Parent and senior citizen volunteers are always needed. Please contact Angie McArthur or Stu Hobbs if interested.

Happy early spring!
