Shortage of Workers Closes Voting Precinct at Brevort

Moran Township's long-standing second voting precinct in Brevort Village was closed at a sparsely attended public meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort Tuesday, February 19.

All township residents can vote at the township hall on US-2. Residents living 20 miles or more from the hall can also vote by absentee ballot.

The single biggest factor in the decision was the difficulty of finding both Republicans and Democrats to man the polls. Participation by both parties is required, said Township Clerk Kris Vallier.

A secondary concern was the cost of programming staterequired, electronic voting machines used for elections. By itself, the $500 needed to do so was not a strong enough reason to close the precinct, noted Township Supervisor Jim Durm.

Letters informing residents of the closure will be sent to the 158 voters in precinct two, which includes both Brevort village and the Ozark area. By request, voters in these areas can be added to an absentee ballot application list and receive applications for ballots before each election. Once applications are processed, the ballots are sent three weeks before each election.
