Shelter Bay's Carmody To Run for 11th Circuit Court Bench

Bill Carmody of Shelter Bay in Alger County has announced that he is seeking election to the 11th Circuit Court bench for Alger, Schoolcraft, Mackinac, and Luce counties November 4. Mr. Carmody is the probate and circuit court family division judge for Schoolcraft and Alger counties.

Charles H. Stark, the current chief judge of the 11th Circuit, whose term expires December 31, is not eligible to seek another term because of his age.

Mr. Carmody is a former teacher in the Manistique Area Schools, an administrator at Western Michigan University, and served on the board of trustees at the university from 1997 to 2000.

He served as a consultant with the Department of Education in Lansing and is a former superintendent for Royal Oak Township in Oakland County. In 1985, he began law practice in Marquette and Munising and was in private practice at the time of his appoint- ment to the bench in 2000.

He is an Upper Peninsula native and a 1965 graduate of William G. Mather High School in Munising. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Northern Michigan University, a Doctorate in Educational Administration from Western Michigan University, and received his Juris Doctorate from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing in 1983.

He and his wfie, Molly, have a daughter, Willow, 16.
