Rudyard Jonathan Brown, a sophomore at Rudyard High School, won the People to People Award, and will be a student ambassador for our Rudyard community. He will spend 20 days learning about Australia's culture, meet the President of Australia, travel through the jungle, will work on real Australian farms to see how techniques differ from ours, and go to the Great Barrier Reef. His group of 40 high school students will climb the tallest steel bridge in Australia, learn how to surf, and go to the Sydney Opera House. He will leave in June and receive high school and college credit for the program. Student ambassadors represent their country while exploring the world. Jonathan needs to raise $7,000 for the program. His family and friends will host a bake sale Wednesday, March 19, at Glen's market in Sault Ste. Marie, and also a spaghetti benefit dinner April 23 at the Kinross Recreation Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jonathan is supported by his mother, Geri Burrows, and brothers and sisters James, Tina, Jamie, and Priscilla. Donations will also be accepted in care of Geri Burrows at 15 Windermere, Kincheloe Michigan 49788. Chari Fischer, Rudyard's blood drive coordinator, said many residents came out and gave blood March 7 at the community center. The goal was 29 units of blood, and 42 units were donated, with eight first time donors; 24 of the donors were from Rudyard. This drive was sponsored by the Rudyard Lions Club with help from the National Honor Society, Rudyard First Presbyterian Church Youth Group, and college students. I would like to wish everyone a happy St. Patrick's Day. Keep all those e-mails and phone calls coming my way to let everyone know what is going on. Until next week, see you soon. |
