Phosphorus Tests Taken at Cedarville Bay

Environmental contractors (clockwise, from left) Doug Knauer, Tina Mitchell, and George Pelkola, all of the Marquette area, and Bob Dunn of Cedarville, extract sediment samples from Cedarville Bay March 4 for analysis by the Department of Environmental Quality. Phosphorus levels will determine how the state will manage nutrient levels in the bay. Clark Township discharges treated wastewater containing phosphorus into the bay twice a year, which may contribute to heavy weed and algae growth. Local residents and Clark Township officials are working with the DEQ to try to find an alternative place to discharge the treated water. Mr. Dunn and Bob "Lakeside" Smith of the Cedarville Bay Group assisted with the sampling. (Photograph by Bob Smith)
