Alfred Matchinske Alfred H. Matchinske, 88, of Engadine, was a U.S. Army Air Force World War II veteran who worked for U.S. Steel Corporation in Chicago. Mr. Matchinske died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born August 16, 1919, in Chicago to Charles and Anna (nee Fellman) Matchinske, and he attended schools there. During World War II, Mr. Matchinske served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater. He married Elizabeth B. Holt January 17, 1942, at St. Brides Church in Chicago. They lived and worked in the Chicago area before moving to Engadine in June 1975. Mr. Matchinske was employed as a motor inspector/electrician for the U.S. Steel Corporation. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Engadine and the Boucha-Draves- Raski VFW Post 8372 of Engadine. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Mr. Matchinske is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Matchinske of Engadine; two sons and their families, Edward and Joann Matchinske of Monee, Illinois, and Lawrence and Linda Matchinske of Portland, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert Matchinske and Robert Matchinske, both of Engadine, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester Matchinske and Melvin Matchinske, and a sister, Shirley Belka. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, March 10, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine. Services took place at noon at the church with the Reverend Arthur Bode officiating. Aluncheon was served at the church following the service. Burial with military honors will take place in the spring at Engadine Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans at 425 Fisher Street in Marquette, or to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Engadine Building Fund. Messier-Broullire Funeral Home of Manistique assisted the family with arrangements. |
