Hello, spring! I heard birds singing the other afternoon; it was a beautiful and welcome sound. Spring is such a nice time of year, with the fresh smell in the air, birds singing, and animals out and about.

There's so much to be thankful for, here in our little towns of the Upper Peninsula.

The Newberry Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the annual dinner awards. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber office.

There will be bingo Thursday, March 20, at the Newton Township Hall in Gould City. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with bingo starting at 7 p.m. Players must be at least 18 years old.

The Newberry Elks Club will have men's stag night Thursday, March 20.

The Newberry Eagles Club will have a fish fry Friday, March 21, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the club on M-28 in Newberry, and pizza night Tuesday, March 25.

The General Federated Women's Club of Newberry will meet at the home of Sharon Lemaire Tuesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. The program will be "Wills and Living Trusts," presented by Steve Ford. Members are reminded to continue saving stamps for veterans, Box Tops for Education, and the UPC symbols from Campbell's Labels for Education.

McMillan Lodge 400 of Free and Accepted Masons will meet Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. in the lodge room for M.M. degree work, then walk across the street to the Falls Hotel, in Newberry, for dinner. Guests are welcome at the dinner.

Happy birthday to Wanda Kovar March 20, Brandy VanHise March 21, Payton Butkovich March 22, Jonah Miller March 23, Jim Oven March 24, Erica Germain and Hannah Fettig March 25, and Clyde Plue March 26.
