Commodities Surplus Food Distribution Is Set for March 19 and 20 Commodities surplus food distribution through the Emergency Food Assistance Program will take place in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Wednesday, March 19, and Thursday, March 20. Commodities to be distributed are green beans, canned beef, carrots, frozen ham, macaroni, tuna, peanut butter, vegetable soup, and spaghetti sauce. Food will be given out on a first come, first served basis. The distribution schedule follows: • Mackinac County Community Action Agency Fenlon Center in St. Ignace, Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; • Whitefish Township Hall in Paradise, Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon; • Superior Township Hall in Brimley, Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; • Rudyard Community Center at Rudyard, Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; • St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; • Newberry Community Building, formerly McMillan Township Hall, Wednesday, 11 a.m. to noon, line cars up in alley adjacent to Newberry Avenue. All participants who previously received food at Hulbert American Legion are asked to go to the distribution site in Newberry. Persons receiving commodities must present a 2008 Yellow Food Card. To apply for a 2008 Yellow Food Card and learn about income eligibility guidelines, call the local Community Action Agency. Persons receiving food stamps or surplus foods from Native American programs may automatically qualify, but must complete an application. Applicants must show proof of residence, proof of total current household income, Social Security numbers, and birth dates. New cards will not be issued on the day of distribution.
