Trojans Girls, Boys Top U.P. Teams; Duncan, Paquin Named to All Class

The Cedarville girls and boys basketball squads were selected as the Class D Teams of the Year, while Jessie Duncan and C.J. Paquin of the Cedarville Trojans were named to the All-Class Dream Team, during the annual meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association at the Don Bottum Student Center at Marquette's Northern Michigan University Wednesday, March 19.

Sonja Duncan of Cedarville was named Class D Coach of the Year, after guiding her Trojans to a 19-1 record during the regular season, finishing 24-2 overall, that included a final four appearance.

Jessie Duncan of Cedarville was the only junior on the All-Class Dream Team. She was joined by seniors Jessica Roell of North Dickinson, Jessica Racine and Chelsie Wealton of Westwood, and Lauren Beeler of L'Anse.

The Class D first team included juniors Billie McLeod of Cedarville and Brooke Granquist of North Central, seniors Elizabeth Robble of Crystal Falls-Forest Park, Allie Gustafson of Ewen-Trout Creek, and Molly Laurin of Carney- Nadeau.

Lauren MacArthur of Engadine and Amber Aikens of Brimley were named to the second team.

The Class A-B-C first team included seniors Catherine Angeli of Marquette and Stephanie Sayen of Hancock, and juniors Samantha Manderfield of Houghton, Kelsey Roberts of Kingsford, and Kim Vallier of Manistique.

Area players receiving second team honors were Amanda Coveyou of St. Ignace, Emily Jeffreys of Rudyard, and Abbi Fegan of Sault Ste. Marie.

This was the 33rd meeting by the association for girls basketball.

Paquin was joined on the boys basketball All-Class Dream Team by junior Joe Simon of Marquette, and seniors Brent Parrett of Stephenson, Taylor Brule of Houghton, and Travis Swanson of Negaunee.

The Class A-B-C first team included seniors Craig Wallis of Rudyard, Andy Cretens of Gladstone, Anthony Katona of Negaunee, Nick Steber of Calumet, and junior Brett Beland of Menominee.

Senior James Peterson of St. Ignace was named to the second team.

The Class D first team included seniors Jordan Duncan of Cedarville, Chase Leskela of Ewen- Trout Creek, Erik Peterson of Crystal Falls-Forest Park, and Kyle Smith of Painesdale-Jeffers.

Junior Tony LaPlant of Ewen- Trout Creek and seniors Jason Duncan and Kevin Thompson of Cedarville were named to the second team.

This was the association's 58th meeting for boys basketball.

Special, Honorable Mention

Gerrit Mortensen of St. Ignace was awarded special mention and receiving honorable mention were Woody Beardsley of Mackinac Island, and John Troyer and Arik Hesselink, both of Rudyard, for the boys.

Nicole Elmblad of St. Ignace, Ashley Sweeney of Cedarville, Shauni Rutledge of Engadine, Courtney Bruni of Pickford, and Jessica Graham of Brimley earned honorable mention for the girls.

Coach, Teams of the Year

Tom Hammar of Westwood was named girls Class A-B-C Coach of the Year.

Sonja Duncan of Cedarville received seven votes, followed by Mike Roell of North Dickinson and Kathleen McGrath of Watersmeet with five votes, and Greg Trowbridge of Superior Central with four, for Class D top coach.

Mike O'Donnell of Negaunee was selected boys Class A-B-C Coach of the Year and Tom Caudill of Ewen-Trout Creek was named Class D Coach of the Year.

Coach Caudill completed his career with a 558-149 overall record, the most wins by an Upper Peninsula coach.

Teams of the Year for girls included Marquette in Class A-B, Westwood in Class C, and Cedarville in Class D, and, in boys basketball, Menominee was named top team in Class A-B, Negaunee in Class C, and Cedarville in Class D.

More Accolades for Trojans

Coach David Duncan received the All-State Class D Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and junior C.J. Paquin was named to Class D All-State team by the Associated Press.

Jessie Duncan was named to the second team and Billie McLeod received third team honors by Mick McCabe of The Detroit Free Press.
