Local Students Display Ingenuity with Science Fair Projects

Students in recent science fairs at Gros Cap School, DeTour Area Schools, and Engadine Consolidated Schools demonstrated experiments on topics as diverse as ionic wind to the needs of plant life. Winners in local districts went on to the Regional Science Fair at Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in Sault Ste. Marie, Tuesday, March 18. At LSSU, from Gros Cap, Brandon Marshall, seventh grade, and Lynette Colegrove, eighth grade, both earned second place awards in the seventh-andeighth grade divisions. From DeTour, Scott Bosley took first place, and Cameron Livingston took second place, in the thirdgrade division.
At the Gros Cap science fair, students competed in grades two through eight. Winners' names and first, second, and third place rankings are as follows: second grade: first place, Ned Nclennan; second, Trevor Soblaskey; third, Fred Lounsberry. Third grade: first place, Steve Seccia; second, Jimmy Reynolds; third, Heather Ryan. Fourth grade: first place, Tristan Calcaterra; second, Tayler Schnicke; third, Ben Doran. Fifth grade: first place, James Cryderman; second, Lillian Calcaterra; third, Allison Gustafson. Sixth grade: first place, Rachel Hetherington; second, Zach Phillips; third, Caleb McFarlane. Seventh grade: first place, Dakota McLennan; second, Galloway Thurston; third, Brandon Marshall. Eighth grade; first place, Jeffry Misner; second, Lynette Colegrove; tied for third, Levi Thompson and Lawrence O'Boyle. Engadine Consolidated had its first science fair this year. Only sixth grade students participated. Tanner Flatt took first place. Kyle McClelland took second, and Brooke Livermore took third.
At DeTour Area Schools, science fair students in kindergarten and second through eighth grades participated. Winners are as follows: Kindergarten: Edyn Nettleton, Wyatt Galarowic, and Jordan Scott. Second grade: Skylar Pardee. Third grade: Madison Wilkie, Scott Bosley, and Cameron Livingston. Fourth grade: Millie Reed and Dylan Clark. Fifth grade: Alexis Scott and Savanna Mickelson. Sixth grade: Hannah Reed, Hayley Warner, and Makayla Ross. Seventh grade: Devin Livingston, Mary Firack, Alyssa Anderson, and Nick Newell.
These students went on to compete at Lake State University against all other participating schools in the Intermediate School District.
Participating districts included Brimley Area Schools, DeTour Area Schools, Joseph K. Bahweting School, Moran Township School, Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter School, St. Mary's Catholic School, Engadine Consolidated Schools, and Sault Area Pubic Schools.
