Film Incentive Package Is Proposed To Boost Economy A bipartisan plan is proposed to create jobs and boost Michigan's economy by attracting the film industry to the state with a competitive film incentive package. Lawmakers heard testimony about the proposal March 4, and the Michigan Senate passed the package of bills Wednesday, March 12. The package received support from Michigan actor Jeff Daniels, Michigan film producers, and other industry advocates at a joint committee hearing of the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee and the House Commerce Committee. Senator Jason Allen, who chairs the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee, said the bipartisan film incentive package would make it easier and more affordable for production companies to film in Michigan. "We're rolling out the red carpet in hopes that Michigan's economy will attract plenty of black ink," said Mr. Allen, of Traverse City. "This investment makes sense. The emerging digital media can become a major economic driver in our state. The incentives we hope to offer will attract filmmakers and reap tremendous dividends in the years to come." Under the plan, Michigan filmmakers would enjoy a 40% tax credit, the biggest tax break for the film industry in the nation. In addition, other tax incentives, loan programs, and job training expense credits would make Michigan one of the most inexpensive states for production work. The incentive package also opens up state properties such as parks, buildings, roads, and landmarks to be used, facilitating the process producers normally would have to go through to film in the state. |
