St. Marys River Habitat Meeting To Be April 7

A meeting on the status of fish and wildlife habitat and populations in the St. Marys River is planned Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in the Lake Superior State University Cisler Center in Sault Ste. Marie. It is hosted by the university and the Bi-national Public Advisory Council (BPAC).

This is the second of a series of three meetings that began last fall, designed to get input from local residents about improving the status of fish and wildlife habitat and populations deemed "impaired" by the St. Marys River Remedial Action Plan.

During the first meeting, participants helped identify specific projects and actions. This second meeting is designed to get further feedback on the proposed remedial actions and information that will be necessary to consider the habitat and populations to be restored.

People who visit the river to view wildlife, for hunting and fishing, who operate tourism businesses, or just have a concern about water quality and its effect on fish and wildlife habitat and populations are welcome to attend. Anyone who cannot attend the meeting but would like to provide written comments for the project may contact the project staff listed below.

The project is a joint effort of the LSSU Biology Department and the BPAC for the St. Marys River Area of Concern, and funded by the Great Lakes Commission.

For more information, contact Greg Zimmerman, associate professor in the university's Biology Department, at (906) 635-2470 or gzimmerman@LSSU.edu or project assistant Andrew Johnson at (906) 379-1313 or johns660@ gmail.com.
