Glen Shaw

Glen Shaw
Glen Frederick Shaw, 90, was a sailor at heart, who worked on the water for most of his life. He was a sailor on Great Lakes freighters, the Neebish Island Ferry, the Drummond Island Ferry, and a tugboat captain during the construction of the Mackinac Bridge, as well as during several Sault Locks construction projects. Mr. Shaw, a lifelong resident of DeTour Village, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw.

He was born in DeTour April 27, 1917, to George and Mable (nee Monroe) Shaw.

He married Martha Mae "Joan" Lee in Sault Ste. Marie March 13, 1937, and they recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

Mr. Shaw's book, "Ships, Great Lakes and Me," was published a few years ago. He enjoyed participating in the Great Tug Boat Races on the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was a member of the DeTour Union Presbyterian Church and was active at the DeTour Passage Historical Museum. Mr. Shaw enjoyed woodworking, making stools, planters, birdhouses, and holiday decorations. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening.

Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons and their families, Robert Shaw and Tina Vance of Kincheloe, and Randall and Connie Shaw of Pinconning; a daughter-inlaw, Lila Shaw of Sault Ste. Marie; six grandchildren and their families, Robbie Shaw and Carlene, Rodney and Brenda Shaw, Richard Shaw, Roger Shaw Jr. and Cathy, Jeremy and Julie Shaw, and Amanda Shaw and Leo Pomaville; and nine greatgrandchildren, Bradley, Courtny, Trevor, Taylor, Tony, Tiffany, Natalie, Makayla, and Madison Shaw. Also surviving are two nieces, Ruth Ann Gault and Meta Shaw.

He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Shaw, and one brother, Alvin Shaw.

Visitation was held Friday, March 28, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services were held Saturday, March 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Union Presbyterian Church in DeTour Village, with the Reverend Judith Arnold conducting the service. There was visitation at the church Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the DeTour Passage Historical Museum or the American Cancer Society.
