Leon Prior

Leon Prior, 101, of Mackinaw City, was a World War II veteran and a dock master in Mackinaw City for 27 years. Mr. Prior passed away in his sleep Sunday, March 23, 2008, at Mackinac Straits Hospital and Health Center in St. Ignace.

He was born December 20, 1906, in Sault Ste. Marie to Richard and Sophia (nee Leheigh) Prior.

Mr. Prior married Meta Wegner.

He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was then employed with the State of Michigan as a dock master in Mackinaw City and retired after 27 years of service. In his younger years, Mr. Prior built golf courses and was a professional golfer. He enjoyed doing yard work and spending winters in Florida with his wife.

Mr. Prior is survived by one son and his family, Jerry and Sandra Prior of Mackinaw City; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1979, an infant daughter, Barbara, and two brothers, Art Prior of Cheboygan and Leo Prior of Mason.

A service will be announced at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City.

Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan assisted the family with arrangements.
