Mackinac Island To Adjust Elevators New state requirements for elevators in municipal facilities are forcing Mackinac Island's three municipal buildings with elevators to make adjustments that may cost up to $3,000. Kelly Bean, assistant to the mayor, told the Buildings and Grounds Committee Tuesday, April 15, that the gaps between the elevator and each floor must now be only three-quarters of an inch. Gaps at City Hall, the Courthouse, and Stuart House Museum are two to three inches, she said. The city's elevator contractor, Central Elevator, would charge the city $500 for the first landing and $400 for every landing after that. Among the three buildings, there are seven landings. The most economical way to remedy the problem is to mend sheet metal to the gaps, avoiding having to dismantle the entire elevator, Ms. Bean said. There is no deadline for when the project must be done. |
