DeTour Area
By Barbara Buschbacher 297-8075 bbann@sault.com

What a wonderful weekend it was to be outdoors. Gardens were planned, yards and walkways cleaned up, and great food cooked on the grill. It's springtime in DeTour.

Congratulations to the DeTour Botanical Gardens for the complimentary and inviting article in the publication, Grand Gardens magazine, a monthly that focuses mainly on gardens in western Michigan. The article, aptly titled "Diamond in the U.P. Rough," was positive about the "must see" Botanical Gardens, especially the volunteer effort necessary to maintain gardens of this magnitude. Many garden volunteers began the gardens, work effortlessly each year, and help raise funds to keep the gardens going. On that note, the Gardens Work Bees will start Thursday, May 1, and participantss are asked to bring their garden tools.

The DeTour Village Museum will reopen for the season Memorial Day weekend. Annalee Buschbacher donated historical pictures of the Village. Most of the pictures have writing on the back, giving dates and time frames of all the events and people, and these notes were made by Alfred LaMere.

It's time to plan ahead for the third annual Fine Arts Festival Saturday, June 3. This event has proven to be one of the most attended events in the Village. Organizer Nancy Mordecai asks if you wish to have a table to sell your art or goods, contact her to secure your site at (906) 297-5021.

Wilderness Tabernacle held its spring luncheon Saturday, April 19, for DeTour area women. A record 62 were in attendance. Fun was had by all, prizes were awarded for funny life stories, special hats were worn, and there was a salt and pepper shaker exchange.

On the academic front, congratulations to top students Max Peterson and Nathan Klamerus for receiving the Principal's Awards for academic achievements. Max plans on a college career at Northern Michigan University, while Nathan plans on attending the University of Michigan in the fall. Good luck to both of them.

A thought: Ask God's blessing on your work, but don't ask Him to do it for you.
