East Crew Leader Hired; Shed Gets OK The Mackinac County Road Commission hired Frank Stempki of St. Ignace for the position of East District crew leader Tuesday, April 15, during the commission meeting. A heavy equipment operator since 1976, he was one of two applicants for the position that was posted in response to a grievance filed by Union Chapter Chair Howard Hood after commissioners last month named seasonal worker Terry Cece of Epoufette the temporary acting foreman to work in place of Dale Williams of Cedarville for six weeks while Mr. Williams is on sick leave. Mr. Cece had been working as the East District Garage crew leader before he was appointed to the acting foreman position. Mr. Stempki will be paid $17.13 per hour as crew leader and $22.66 as acting foreman until Mr. Williams returns, no earlier than April 24, commissioners said. As a seasonal worker, Mr. Cece will be laid off when Mr. Stempki takes over. The road commission received state approval to move forward with construction on a salt and sand shed at the East District garage on St. Ignace Road in Marquette Township. The shed will be constructed under a cooperative agreement between the commission and Michigan Department of Transportation, which wants to replace the existing shed in Cedarville. The road commission also has a contract with MDOT to maintain M-129 and M-134 in the East District, so the shed serves the district's state highways. The road commission has been using MDOT's old salt shed in Cedarville to serve the east side of Mackinac County. The new shed in Marquette Township will be more centrally located and should make spreading salt and sand more efficient, the commission reports. |
