Engadine

What's up with this cold weather? Going from the 70's, a couple of weeks ago, to much lower temperatures this week, including a few snow flurries Saturday evening, wasn't funny.

I heard it's not nice to fool Mother Nature, but it's not fair if she fools us, either.

At the Newberry Area Chamber of Commerce's annual awards dinner Saturday, April 26, the "Employer of the Year" award went to Danny Price of Engadine. Danny and his family own and operate Danny's Auto Value in Engadine and Newberry. Another local winner was Carrie Sadler, of Engadine, who won "Student of the Year." Carrie is a high school senior at Engadine Consolidated Schools.

Other award winners include Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for "Business of the Year," The Old Bank Collection of Shops in Newberry for "New Business of the Year," Lyndon Lutz for "Friend of the Chamber," and Peter Rahilly for "Outstanding Citizen of the Year."

The Luce County Government Building will be closed Friday, May 2, at noon, so the village can perform electrical work on the building transformer.

Eagles Aerie/Auxiliary 3701 is hosting its annual Child Advocacy Day Saturday, May 3, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the LCCR & R Center.

There will be many activities, from a Department of Natural Resources presentation, to information about Girls and Boys Scouts. Parents of children up to eight years of age, or third grade, are welcome. For more information, and directions to the center, call (906) 293- 8674.

The Hulbert American Legion Post 393 will hold its annual pig roast Saturday, May 3, starting at 4 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children.

There will be a submarine sandwich pick-up Saturday, May 10, at the Youth Center in Newberry. There also will be a bake sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Engadine Consolidated Schools is planning the Engadine School Education Foundation and Sports Boosters Spring Fling, featuring the Green and Gold Revue, Saturday, May 10, beginning at 4 p.m. at the school.

The grand finale will be the allschool variety show, the "Green and Gold Revue," at 7 p.m. in the big gymnasium.

Dairyland Donkey Basketball will be Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the Engadine High School gymnasium. For more information, call Sean Bennett at (906) 477-6424, JR Clark at (906) 477-6313, or Janice Wagner at the Engadine Library. This event is sponsored by the Engadine Band Boosters. Advance tickets are $5, or $7 at the door.

Garfield Township residents Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until the dumpsters are full. Spring cleanup will be for Garfield Township residents only, on a first-come, first-serve basis. One pick-up load per household. Items not accepted in the dumpster are yard waste, batteries, liquid, paint or aerosol cans, tires, computer monitors, roofing materials, household trash, and scrap wood.

Jack Howard will take refrigerators and freezers with freon removal certificate attached, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, and miscellaneous metal.

Discarding on anything behind the ball field in Naubinway is prohibited. Drop-off will be in only one location this year, at the Town Hall parking lot in Engadine. Naubinway residents will use this drop-off location, too. No disposal is allowed unless a township official is at location. If you have any questions, call (906) 477-6481.

Condolences to the family of John Wagner, 87, a lifelong Engadine area resident, who passed away Monday, April 21, at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique. His smile and politeness will always be remembered.
