Julie Reed and Shelby Thomas Receive Fine Arts Scholarships Julie Reed and Shelby Thomas, DeTour Area Schools students, have been awarded scholarships to fine arts camps for this summer, announced Jean Bloom of the scholarship committee for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Fine Arts Council, and director of the DeTour Area Community Choir. Miss Reed, 13, of DeTour, began playing French horn in sixth grade and trumpet in seventh grade. Miss Reed will be attending Blue Lake Music Camp in Muskegon. She has also shown theatrical talent performing in three school musicals. Miss Thomas, 16, moved to DeTour Village from California five years ago. She became interested in art during eighth grade. "All students had to be exposed to art, and I learned that I really liked it," she said. She has enrolled each year in an art class at the school and takes classes while in California visiting her father. A sample of her work will be on display at the DeTour Fine Art Fair in posters she illustrated for the dance program. Her scholarship will be used for private art instruction in California this summer. Both students join 30 other current and former DeTour area students who have furthered their love for the arts through the Fine Arts Scholarships. Funds for the scholarships are raised by private donations made during the DeTour Area Community Choir's summer and holiday concerts in DeTour Village and on Drummond Island. |
