Katie Spencer, a junior at Albion College, became the first female athlete to win an individual event for the college since 1999, during the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) track and field championships, winning a title in the discus throw at Alma College Thursday, May 1.
Spencer posted a personal best throw of 130'9" on her second attempt of the finals, and, after a long day, the St. Ignace recordholder withstood the efforts of the favorite, Leigha Oberle of Calvin College, by nine inches.
During the second day of the championships, Spencer recorded her second personal best with a toss of 33'9" in the shot put for eighth place Friday, May 2.
"All the hard work has paid off and a dream came true," said Spencer. "I was ready and felt good during the discus competition. The temperature was in the mid 60's and wind helped all the throwers."
