Les Cheneaux
By Helen Shoberg 484-2626 helenshoberg@centurytel.net

The Saturday of Mother's Day weekend was an absolutely lovely day. It was a day at our house when my children got together and cleaned the yard, burned brush, took down the storm windows, and brought out the porch furniture. All of this activity was topped with an outdoor cookout.

Many trees are beginning to show green. We have had some much needed rain and if the weather would just stay warm, how nice it would be.

The High School and Middle School Band Concert and Art Show Tuesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in the Duncan Gymnasium will be an occasion not to be missed. Graduation in Cedarville will be Sunday, May 25 at 2:30 p.m., Memorial Day weekend. How quickly the time goes by.

A red-bellied woodpecker was seen by Marilyn McLeod at the suet feeder several times last week. This is the very northern end of the territory of this woodpecker and it is very unusual to see one. Also, the hummingbirds are back. One appeared at my feeder last Friday.

The attached photo was taken last week when Bob Smith, who lives on Lakeside Road, put out more houses for the tree swallows.

The birds in this photo were at the house less than five minutes after it was put up, according to Mr. Smith. There were so many more swallows than usual this year that he put up more houses this spring.

The Harry Harris-type bird house, by the way, was built by 10 Teddy Bowlby, the 10-year-old son of Jason and Sue Bowlby. Mr. Bowlby has made several of these little houses and should be very proud of the work he does.

The Red Hats, Les Cheneaux Rouge Chapeau, will meet at the Cedarville Foods parking lot at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, for sharing the ride before driving to Sault Ste. Marie for luncheon at Freighters Restaurant. Members should be sure to be there on time if they plan to go.
