DeTour

Summertime in DeTour is a busy time.

Saturday, July 19, members of the DeTour Botanical Gardens Club will hold their annual Home Tour and Garden Walk with luncheon. Tickets can be purchased separately for the home tour, separately for the garden walk, and separately for the luncheon, or a ticket may be purchased for all three activities. The luncheon is held in the beautiful gardens of the Bob and Sandy Wytiaz home. The price of tickets is $10 for the home tour only, and for the walk and luncheon, the price is $20. There are three seatings for the luncheon, at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. The first two seatings are sold out, but there are a limited number of tickets for the third seating. For more information, contact Julie Rucker at (906) 297-2956.

Homes on the tour include: The Andres (Mrs. Andre is a master gardener); the Witten's home and cottage; the Gravels (garden only); the Nelson home, and the Scotts' home and garden. In the village: The Botanical Gardens; Alex and Linda Fisher's home, and Virg's garden. Maps for the tour will be available at the garden, on M-134, as you approach DeTour Village.

The DeTour Homemakers will hold their annual summer bingo Wednesday, July 23, at the Village Hall. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with bingo starting at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments and food will be served. All proceeds will benefit the Ambulance Corps for new equipment.

Another fun event on the agenda is the E.U.P. Fine Arts Council silent auction and dance scheduled for Saturday, July 26. The silent auction will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The dance, with music provided by DJ Kevin Barrett, will be from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Also included will be complementary food and a cash bar. To date, there are 80 donated gifts. If you would like to donate a gift for the auction, drop your donation off at the Wytiaz home on Ontario Street, across from the Presbyterian Church. The proceeds from this evening's fundraiser will be designated for the restoration of the building once known as Sacred Heart Catholic Hall.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 2, to attend the first spaghetti benefit dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the DeTour Marina. All donated proceeds from this benefit will be given to the DeTour Fire Department and the DeTour Ambulance Emergency Service. There will be entertainment, raffles, 50/50 drawing, and music.

Rehearsals are well underway for a most enjoyable and humorous play, "Kitchen Witches," to be presented Thursday, August 14, in a special performance for the area Red Hat Society members, Friday, August 15, and Saturday, August 16. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. The afternoon performance is scheduled for Sunday, August 17, at 2:30 p.m. Members of the cast are familiar to all of us: Jean Bloom, Mary Hagen, Darlene Jarmusch, Mike Galarowic, director Dawn Hamelink, and producer Olive Warner.

Congratulations to the cast of "On Golden Pond" and director David Rhinard, who have been invited to perform in Curtis this weekend. We're proud of our "talent" and wish them the best. "Break a leg," as they say in show business.

Belated birthday wishes to Ellen Schopp, who recently turned 90 June 18. Her husband, Alan, celebrated his 92nd birthday, also in June. The Schopps had several celebrations. The DeTour Red Hat Society honored Mrs. Schopp with gifts and a beautifully decorated Red Hat cake at the group's monthly luncheon. The Schopps then had a combined celebration at the Village Hall, where family members and friends were invited. May the couple have continued health and happiness.

A thought: Smiles never go up in price or down in value.
