Betty Jean Mrozek, 82, of Raber, was a licensed practical nurse at War Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years. Mrs. Mrozek passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
She was born December 4, 1925, in Hugo, Oklahoma, the youngest of six children.
Mrs. Mrozek grew up in Hugo, but finished high school in Oklahoma City owing to World War II. She attended high school in the mornings and worked for the rest of the day as a telephone operator. She moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where her brother, Wiley, was living and met Sylvester Mrozek at a dance at the non-commissioned officers club.
She and Mr. Mrozek were married April 27, 1946, in Detroit. A few years later, they settled in Sault Ste. Marie, where they lived for many years. She worked as a nurse's aide for several years and then, with four children still at home, she attended college and earned her degree as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in 1964. She worked at War Memorial Hospital as a licensed practical nurse, and was head of the LPN Association and eventually the first union president, representing the LPNs.
While her children were growing up, Mrs. Mrozek was active in the Parent-Teachers Association and the Soo Hockey Association, and their fundraisers. She was a life member of Bender-Johnson Post 79 AmVets Auxiliary and the Raber Senior Citizens.
The Mrozeks have lived in Raber since they retired.
Mrs. Mrozek enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, knitting, making ceramics, reading, dancing, and playing the board game "Aggravation."
She is survived by Sylvester Mrozek, her husband of 63 years; one daughter, Glynice Ann Mrozek of Mason; two sons and their families, Theodore Mrozek of Winter, Wisconsin, and Steven and Cindy Mrozek of Pittsville, Wisconsin; six grandchildren and their families, Andrea and Stu Walker, James and Marilyn Mrozek, Andrew and Vivian Mrozek, Kristi and Scott Goodell, Patty Folz, and Nikky and Mike Smithback; and eight greatgrandchildren, Addison and Skyler Walker, Allyson, Ashleigh, and Alexandra Mrozek, Jacob and Joshua Goodell, and Aric Folz.
