Scott, McClure Hired at Les Cheneaux Schools

When the doors open at Les Cheneaux Community Schools Tuesday, September 2, a new principal and mathematics teacher will greet students. The board of education hired Amy Scott as K-12 principal and Hank McClure as high school mathematics teacher during a special board meeting Wednesday, July 9.

Mr. McClure of Naubinway has a master's degree in mathematics from Western Michigan University and recently taught at Lake Superior State University. He replaces mathematics teacher Zack Sedgwick, who resigned in June.

Ms. Scott, who is from DeTour, replaces Elementary Principal Eric Cardwell, who resigned in June, and Cedarville High School Principal Randy Schaedig, who resigned in May.

Ms. Scott attended the July 21 school board meeting and was introduced to the board by Superintendent Rod Goehmann. She has a master's degree in education administration and has been a curriculum consultant for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District. This is her first job as principal.

In his report to the board, Mr. Goehmann said the school can expect an increase of $101 per pupil from the state, for a total of $7,713 per student. Last year, the school received $7,612 per student. Schools across the state, he said, are expecting increases from $56 to $112.

Administrators expect 325 students this fall, a drop of six students.

The board held its annual organizational meeting prior to the regular business meeting Monday. Board members elected officers and named Kate Ter Haar president, Dave Murray vice president, Marcia Perkins secretary, and Marianne Coyne treasurer. Trustees are Carl McIntire, Dan Burrows, and Ronda McGreevy.

The board also approved an increase in the board secretary's meeting pay to $25. The remaining board members each will receive $20 for meetings, the same as last year.

Monthly meetings will continue to be the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

The board next meets in the school library Monday, August 18, at 7 p.m.
