Sluggish Economy Slows Construction in County
Dips by Almost 1/3 in 2008, Many Areas Report
      Building inspectors across Mackinac County say an almost one-third decline of building permits issued in 2008 can be attributed to the sluggish economy. "It's been holding pretty much steady, about 60 to 65 per year," said City of St. Ignace and St. Ignace Township building inspector Paul Sved. "This year is the exception.

Students Take Walking Challenge
      The challenge is underway as St. Ignace elementary and middle school classes compete to increase after-school activity. Their steps are recorded by pedometers as part of the Safe Routes to School program that combines safety and fitness for kindergarten through eighth grade students.

'State of the City' Will Top Monday's Meeting
Council To Present Budget Priorities for 2009
      Priorities for 2009 will top St. Ignace City Council's agenda when it meets for the first time in the new year Monday, January 5, in a meeting that City Manager Eric Dodson said will define "The State of the City." New projects are planned for the city, including park improvements and ordinance changes.

Island Airport Funding Decision Expected in March
      With proposed improvements to the Mackinac Island Airport approved by federal and state regulators last week, the Mackinac Island State Park Commission will now seek up to $5 million in federal funding. It will also seek renewal of a waiver that allows the Commission to avoid cutting trees near the airport.
