St. Ignace Kiwanis Club Presents Gifts to Community, Just in Time for Christmas
      Three days before Christmas, St. Ignace Kiwanis Club representatives presented gifts to residents at Long Term Care, $500 to the St. Ignace Food Pantry to buy food for distribution, and $250 to the city Recreation Department to purchase helmets for those learning to skate.

$9,000 Raised So Far for New Veterans Van, DAV Reports
      Billie Clark of Moran reports that $9,000 of the necessary $15,000 has been raised to buy a new van to transport veterans to and from the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Iron Mountain. A fish fry is being planned in the spring to continue fundraising. Other fundraisers have included a fish fry in October, a "Forget Me Not" drive at the St.

      Workers at Mackinac County Community Action Agency in St. Ignace hosted 92 people for the annual Christmas luncheon Monday, December 22, serving roast beef, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and several side dishes, with cheesecake for dessert.

Tribe Offers New Home Buying Plan
      A new program will help low income tribal members save money for the purchase of their own home, and information sessions are scheduled in St. Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie, and Newberry next week to explain the program. Offered by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the program will match people's savings deposits in a home ownership account.

83 New State Police Recruits Join Force
      Eighty three new Michigan State Police troopers began their new jobs across the state Monday, December 22, all graduates of the first group of recruits to join the force since 2004. Two Mackinaw City men were among the group. Adam Laninga has been assigned to the L'Anse satellite police post, and Jacob Brey will join the Cadillac post.

      Cloverland Electric Cooperative and Edison Sault Electric attributed power outages in the county to a series of storms that traveled through the region last week. Extreme weather conditions, including rain, freezing rain, snow, and high winds, brought down trees and power lines, said company representatives Monday.

Game Night Begins at Les Cheneaux Library
      Thursday nights in January will be game nights at the Les Cheneaux Community Library, located at 75 Hodek Street in Cedarville. Cedarville Band Students To Play for Donations
      About 85 current and alumni Cedarville band students will participate in a 12-hour overnight Band-A-Thon, which starts at 7 p.m. Friday, January 2, and ends the following morning. The 85-piece band will play in the Cedarville High School gymnasium for 45 minutes at the start of every hour, and take 15-minute breaks between sets, band director Alan Jacobus said.

Lions Club To Maintain Ski Trails in Rudyard
      A groomed cross country ski trail system is maintained by the Rudyard Lions Club on Rudyard Area Schools property. The Rudyard School Farm Trail Network consists of six loops ranging from one-half mile to 4.5 miles in length. For the last 20 years, the trails and parking area have been maintained by the Rudyard Lions Club.

      Kendra Kitchen of Mackinaw City, Nathan Vandusen of Rudyard, and Jeffrey Mahar of Kincheloe earned academic honors for the semester that ended August 2008 at Ferris State University. Opera House Hosts Lightfoot Tribute

      In recognition of New Year's resolutions to quit smoking and using tobacco, health officials are encouraging people to take steps to make their resolution successful, including contacting the Michigan Tobacco Quitline at (800) 784- 8669. Block Sale Underway To Help Fund Les Cheneaux Schools
      Although funds are already being raised and events planned, "Fund the Future" organizers in Les Cheneaux officially began the campaign Tuesday, December 16, with the sale of two "blocks" to the Cedarville branch of Soo Co-op Credit Union. The credit union bought two $250 blocks out of the 400 organizers hope to sell to raise $100,000.

Wheeler Earns U of M Scholarship
      Lisa Wheeler of St. Ignace has been awarded a $600 scholarship to be used toward books and tuition at University of Michigan School of Information. Miss Wheeler earned the scholarship based on her activity in student chapter events for the Michigan Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, which awarded the funds.

Unemployment Rate is Highest in Years
      Michigan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in November increased by three-tenths of a percentage point to 9.6%, according to data released December 17 by the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth. Total employment fell by 35,000 and unemployment rose by 16,000, as the state labor force contracted over the month.
