Clout Has Expiration Date
      All four of northern Michigan's state senators hold party leadership positions this year, giving the north considerable legislative clout. But all are term-limited and can't run again next year. Senator Mike Prusi (D-Ishpeming), a former Steelworkers local union president and three-term state representative, is the newly elected Senate minority leader.

      Denny and Jackie Rippett hosted their annual New Year's Eve get-together at their condominium, where 16 neighbors and friends welcomed the new year at midnight, and promptly departed the premises, at 12:06 a.m. As always, it was a time for visiting and good food.

St. Ignace
      When old man winter rears his head, he doesn't fool around. My family and I were driving back from Marquette Monday, Dec - ember 29, through blowing snow and severe whiteouts. It took about six hours to get to St. Ignace. Even though it's easy to complain about the amount of snow we have here, consider that Marquette already has 100 inches, and it's still just January.

      As the mighty Huron steamed into the Island harbor New Year's Eve, it was loaded with folks coming to celebrate the holiday on Mackinac. The scenery was spectacular, as the brilliant sun was shining down on freshly fallen snow.
