Elevator To Be Added to Catholic Church
      St. Ignatius Loyola Church has received a variance to install an elevator on the corner of Church and Spring Streets, making the church barrier free. A variance needed to allow the enclosure, which will encroach on a 30-foot setback, was granted by the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) at a hearing Monday evening, January 5.

Fiber Optic Cable, Tools Are Stolen
      Fiber optic cable was stolen from Drummond Island sometime between October 18 and November 15. More than $50,000 worth of cable was reported stolen from a building near the Drummond Island Resort on Maxton Road.

$5.8 Million County Budget Adopted
      In a special meeting Monday, December 29, Mackinac County Commissioners adopted the 2009 budget, reviewed bids for the county's audit, and approved extending employment of the tax clerk. The county's 2009 budget of $5.8 million is about 9%, or $483,198.66, more than last year.

Seniors, Disabled People Qualify for Food Benefits
Michigan Approved for Federal Pilot Program Through USDA
      As many as 80,000 Michigan senior citizens and adults with disabilities could automatically get help with their food budgets next year under a federal pilot project. Under the project, adults who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and who live independently could receive at least $60 each month in extra food assistance.

Save Our School Chili Dinner Will Be Held January 9
      As part of the "Fund the Future" campaign, a chili dinner will be Friday, January 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Les Cheneaux Community Schools cafeteria. Bridge Traffic Decline Continues
      Traffic crossing the Mackinac Bridge decreased 5.8% for the month of October, and 7.3% for November, compared to October and November 2007, respectively. Traffic statistics are reported by the Mackinac Bridge Authority. This October, 340,071 vehicles crossed the bridge, while 360,835 crossed during October 2007. Fare revenue for October was up 12%.

County Pumps Up Remonumentation Program by $10,000
      Mackinac County commissioners will contribute $10,000 to the 2009 remonumentation program. The funding will pay for the survey work of eight survey corner posts, which includes administration costs and materials. Jeffrey Davis, Mackinac County surveyor, made the funding request Thursday, December 11.
