      State funding for snowmobile enforcement in Mackinac County was cut $2,440 this season and Sheriff Scott Strait is adjusting to the cuts by changing patrol schedules, collaborating with police in neighboring counties, and operating with the equipment on hand.

Bridge Case In Hands of Federal Court
      By Ryan Schlehuber A $1 million lawsuit was filed in November by Mackinac Bridge Authority and Michigan Department of Transportation charging that a painting company failed to complete warranty work for a job completed in 2003. The lawsuit now is in the hands of a federal court.

      This list, featured annually in The St. Ignace News, memorializes those whose obituaries have appeared in the newspaper during the past 12 months. The list includes 309 persons, whose ages range from infant to 102 years old. Thirty-eight persons, about 13%, were in their 90s, 92 persons, about 30%, were in their 80s, and 72 persons, about 24%, were in their 70s.

Snowmobile Club Will Host Trail Stop Sat.
      The Straits Area Snowmobile Club in St. Ignace is hosting a trail stop Saturday, January 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a cookout on the trail. Club members will greet snowmobilers on Trail Two, known as the Burma Grade. The trail stop is about two miles west of Worth Road and is near the center of the club's trail system.

      Mackinaw City will host its 16th annual Winterfest Thursday, January 15, through Saturday, January 17, 2009. The event includes amateur and professional snow carving, outhouse races, sleigh rides, poker walk, chili cook-off, indoor ice skating, euchre tournament, and an ice fishing tournament from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carp Lake.
