The Straits Area Snowmobile Club in St. Ignace is hosting a trail stop Saturday, January 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a cookout on the trail.

Club members will greet snowmobilers on Trail Two, known as the Burma Grade. The trail stop is about two miles west of Worth Road and is near the center of the club's trail system. A welcoming tent will be set up and a campfire will offer warmth to trail riders. Free hot dogs, coffee, and hot cocoa will be served.

Saturday's event replaces the club's annual January poker run. Club members now are organizing a poker run for Saturday, February 14.

The nonprofit club, which was formed in 1988, is one of more than 30 clubs in the Upper Peninsula working with Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to maintain and improve snowmobile trails. The local organization is responsible for 101 miles of the state's 6,200 miles of snowmobile trails.

For the Straits Area Snowmobile Club, trail maintenance extends from St. Ignace to Trout Lake; also from St. Ignace to the Red Creek Snowmobile Trail, which features the snowmobile bridge built over I- 75, and from St. Ignace to Rexton and over to Cut River.

To ride on state land, snowmobilers must purchase and display a $25 DNR sticker. Some of the money generated from sticker sales is distributed to snowmobile clubs to groom trails.

The local club is seeking volunteers to help maintain trails and will train interested volunteers on the operation of grooming equipment.

For more information on Saturday's event, to join the club, or to volunteer, call club president Jim Dekeyser at 643-7616.
