Livermore To Chair Road Commission

Lester Livermore was elected chairman of the Mackinac County Road Commission, replacing Frank Luepnitz, who served two years in the position. Committee assignments also were set during the board's Tuesday, January 6, meeting.

New commissioner Tom Doty, who was attending his first meeting, was elected vice-chairman of the three-person board. Mr. Doty won his board seat in the November general election, replacing Paul Amacher, who did not seek reelection.

Mr. Doty will serve on the finance and personnel committee and will be the road commission liaison to the North Huron Scenic Pathway Committee. That committee is planning a non-motorized pathway that will stretch from St. Ignace to Drummond Island.

Mr. Livermore will be the liaison to the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners and he was appointed to the policy committee.

During the meeting, commissioners approved two road agreements with Garfield Township. A project to improve approximately two miles of Pleasant Avenue will include culvert replacements, subgrade strengthening, aggregate surfacing, and restoration at an estimated total cost to the township of $132,000, which includes $30,000 for engineering.

A project covering approximately 1.5 miles of H-40 will include crushing and shaping, culvert replacement, blacktop surfacing, paving shoulders, pavement markings, and signs at an estimated cost to the township of $59,500, including $20,000 for engineering.

The next regular road commission meeting will be Tuesday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Ignace.
