60 Compete at Mackinaw Mush
Spectators watch as Jeffrey Siegel of Woodstock, Illinois, leaves the starting gate during the Mackinaw City Mush Sled Dog Races Sunday morning, February 8. About 150 people gathered Sunday at the start and finish area near where I-75 and West Central Avenue cross in Mackinaw City. With temperatures in the mid- 30s on Saturday and Sunday, and more than 100 dogs barking, more than 200 people gathered each day to watch the 20th annual Mackinaw City Mush Sled Dog Race. President of the race organizing committee, Chuck Cullip of St. Ignace said the weather was great for racing on both days.
"It was a little too warm on Saturday. Saturday could been a little colder, but it made it better for spectators," he said. "We had near perfect weather on Sunday."
He said temperatures for racing should be about 15 degrees, and that the warm weather softened the trail a bit, but not enough to cancel the race. About the same number of spectators came out to watch the races on both days as last year.
The two-day time-trial races were Saturday, February 7, and Sunday, February 8. A total of about $2,000 was awarded to the winning riders.
