Brevort Lake Jamboree Is This Weekend
By Jonathan Eppley

Swimming in Brevort Lake is a walleye with a special tag on it, redeemable for a new 2009 Arctic- Cat snowmobile.

If one lucky angler catches this fish during the Brevort Lake Ice Fishing Jamboree this weekend, the snowmobile is theirs, otherwise, the snowmobile will go unclaimed, said event organizer Kirk Lipnitz.

The grand-prize snowmobile will be on display at the tournament Saturday, February 14, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Sunday, February 15, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Brevort Lake.

Two other fish with similar tags, uncaught from previous fishing tournaments, are swimming in the lake, as well. Each of these two fish are redeemable for a $200 cash prize from Moran Lumber Company.

"That's good for anytime, not just during the tournament," Mr. Lipnitz said.

Registration cost for the jamboree is $25 for anglers older than 13, and free for children 12 and younger.

Registration costs, originally set at $35 for this year's jamboree, have now been lowered to $25 owing to the low number of preregistered anglers and complaints about the planned $10 price increase over last year, Mr. Lipnitz said. The 2008 pre-registration cost was set at $25, and $35 after the competition began.

During the jamboree, a $10 refund will be given to those who had already pre-registered at the original $35 price.

Anglers can pre-register for the tournament at Moran Lumber Company, Bradford's Gas and Grocery in Moran, King's Fish Market in Naubinway, St. Ignace True Value, and Ace Hardware in St. Ignace. Organizers expect about 150 people to enter the tournament.

Top prizes in this weekend's jamboree are $500 for the largest walleye, $250 for the largest pike, and $125 for the largest perch. A free mount will also be donated by King's Fish Market for the largest walleye caught during the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded for second and third places, as well as for children.

"Pretty much every kid that participates will get a prize," Mr. Lipnitz said.

A fireworks display is scheduled for Saturday evening. The fireworks will be launched at dusk on the ice near the canal, Mr. Lipnitz said.

"You'll be able to see them from almost anywhere on the lake," he said.

Food and refreshments, such as hamburgers, hotdogs, soft drinks, and hot chocolate, will be available throughout the tournament.
